How to Latch Your Baby?

Here are some great tips on how to latch your baby:

  • Start by holding baby in football hold or cross cradle hold. Both of these positions allow you to control your baby’s head movement.
  • With baby’s head tilted back slightly, line up nipple in front of baby’s nose (as though baby is smelling your nipple)
  • Stroke baby’s lips with your nipple. You may also express some colostrum to stimulate baby to open his mouth.
  • As you are “tickling” baby’s lips, wait until he opens his mouth WIDE. When mouth is wide open, gently tip the nipple and areola into baby’s mouth.
  • Imagine what happens when you are trying to eat a sandwich that is taller than your mouth. Instead of putting it straight into your mouth, you put the bottom part of the sandwich on your lower jaw and tip the rest in to take a bite. Therefore, getting more of it in your mouth. You are trying to do the same thing with your baby and your breast.
